The Planted Evidence

During the investigation, Ronald told police that he and others had been at a location where they discarded shell casings in the yard. Multiple officers were dispatched to search. Canine units were deployed. Metal detectors were used. The property was gone over with care, with method, for hours.
They found nothing.
Then Jeff Henderson arrived. He had been assigned to a separate search warrant at a different address but left that scene to assist with this investigation. He went inside. He did a quick walkthrough. He came back out. And he announced that he had found bullets.
Hours of searching by multiple trained officers, dogs, professional equipment, had produced nothing. Jeff Henderson went in alone for a few minutes and found what everyone else had missed.
The credibility of that discovery should have been zero. In a system functioning as it should, with the oversight mechanisms in place that are supposed to prevent this kind of abuse, that discovery would have been examined, questioned, rejected. But the system was not functioning as it should. The system wanted a conviction.
Jeff Henderson was convicted years later of planting evidence, falsifying reports, framing defendants. Forty-two people had their federal prison sentences overturned as a result of what he had done. Forty-two. These were not people with ambiguous cases. Some had been recorded on wiretaps. Some had been caught holding contraband. The convictions looked solid. But they had been built, at least in part, on Henderson’s lies. They collapsed.
Forty-two people were freed. And Clarance Goode, Jr. has never been granted a single hearing on Henderson’s role in his case. Post-conviction lawyers filed an appeal on the issue, but he was denied by the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals, which seems to be normal for this court. The federal public defender’s office lawyers representing him on his next appeal told him he was procedurally barred from raising that issue again. Every other door stayed closed. The machinery moved on.
The door closed.
